The accompanying spouse’s first six weeks in Germany
A humane framework for language, household administration, work preparation and connection after arrival in Germany.
Relocation plans commonly give one partner a fixed structure: a start date, workplace and colleagues. The accompanying spouse may arrive with a much wider brief—support the household, learn German, understand residence conditions, consider work and help everyone settle. That is too much to treat as one task.
Week one: reduce the number of decisions
Choose a small daily anchor before adding ambitious goals. It might be the same bakery visit, a walk to the local library or twenty minutes of German after breakfast. Keep a shared list for household administration so that one person does not silently become responsible for every letter and appointment.
Weeks two and three: map the official routes
Use official sources to identify whether a profession is regulated and whether qualification recognition is relevant. Do not pay an unverified intermediary merely because the process feels unfamiliar. Save the correct office name, source link and one next question; you do not need to solve an entire career route in an afternoon.
Weeks four to six: build repeated contact
Belonging usually grows from repeated, ordinary encounters. A weekly language café, parent group, sports class, faith community or neighbourhood volunteering shift offers more continuity than collecting event listings. Pick one activity that is reachable and sustainable.
Keep the couple conversation fair
Set aside a weekly check-in that is not an administrative meeting. Ask what each partner is carrying, what can wait and which expectation came from the move rather than a conscious agreement. The working partner’s fatigue is real; so is the accompanying partner’s loss of independence and familiar competence.
A six-week rhythm should be light enough to survive difficult days. Progress can mean understanding one letter, greeting one neighbour or knowing which question to ask next.
